An SDR or Software Defined Radio is a radio where the wanted signal is extracted by software, or in the case of a transmitter, the signal is generated by software. Thus, one radio can perform many different functions just by changing the software, whether it be sound or television broadcast, or data such as WiFi, Bluetooth or GPS. See Software Defined Radio in the Wiki.
